IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Judging Iowa cornerback Desmond King for postseason honors wont be easy.King might be the first Hawkeyes player to be considered for an All-America team simply because he stepped on the field every week.Teams have avoided throwing anywhere near King, the reigning Thorpe Award winner as the nations top defensive back. Kings numbers have suffered as a result, but Iowa ranks 13th nationally in opponent completion percentage at 51.3.King and the Hawkeyes (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) host No. 10 Wisconsin (4-2, 1-2) on Saturday.Hes a durable player. Most of the really great players that have played here, thats one trait that ... I think is a real key to greatness, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. Hes playing well on defense ... and hes been doing an extraordinary job on special teams.Despite the fact that opponents have rarely given King a chance to prove himself on defense in 2016, hes still wrapping up one of the great careers in school history.King earned a starting spot just two games into his career and never gave it up. As a sophomore in 2014, King earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors while picking off three passes, and last season he emerged as one of the nations best defenders. King had eight interceptions, earned consensus All-America honors and was named one of five finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award. That seemed like a resume of a player ready to test the NFL Draft. But King, to the pleasant surprise of the coaching staff, decided he needed another year of college ball. For me, personally, I had a lot to work on. A lot to improve on, and a lot of maturing as well, said King, who has one interception this season.Part of the reason the 5-foot-11 King wasnt considered a lock to be a first-round draft pick was his size. But relying on his instincts and relentless film study, King has found a way to stand out.He is the go-to return man for the Hawkeyes this season. Hes 12th nationally with 28.6 yards per kickoff return -- without the benefit of a long touchdown to pad that total -- and 33rd with 9.7 yards on punt returns. It helps me in both ways. Its helping me here because Im helping my team, and its helping me for the next level, King said.Despite not scoring a touchdown through six games, King had seemed like he was on the verge of making a big play since September.Last week, Purdue was forced to throw Kings way late in the fourth quarter -- and King was finally able to show off. King jumped a deep route near the sidelines and raced for a 41-yard touchdown that sealed Iowas 49-35 win over the Boilermakers .The moment was a rare opportunity for King to remind everyone what can happen when they test him. When the balls not thrown your way, our coaching staff is still looking at how you are playing your guy, was your technique right, things like that, King said. Youve just got to play your best and be ready.---Online: www.collegefootball.ap.orgFake Nationals Jerseys . Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006. After taking two big hits this week -- losing at home and dropping back-to-back games for the first time all season -- Indiana struck back by playing its most complete game of the year. SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarner didnt take any personal satisfaction from his first career victory over the Atlanta Braves. Theres no doubt what it meant to his team. Bumgarner struck out a season-high 11 over seven innings, Gregor Blanco entered in the fifth as a pinch hitter and drove in four runs, and the San Francisco Giants routed the Atlanta Braves 10-1 Saturday. The North Carolina native grew up rooting for the Braves and had been winless against them in four previous starts. Bumgarner (4-1) gave up just four hits and walked two, winning for the first time since April 13. "Theyve got as good a shot as anybody to play October baseball," Bumgarner said of the Braves. "When you play a team like that, you want to play your best baseball, too." Blanco had a three-run double and triple in setting a career high for RBIs. San Franciscos rotation, considered one of the best in the majors, has struggled early this season. But ace Matt Cain tossed eight innings of three-hit ball in Fridays win, and coupled with Bumgarners effort, the Giants can claim the four-game series with a victory in Sundays finale. It was a frustrating day for the National League East-leading Braves. Dan Uggla struck out four times and Chris Johnson went down swinging three times. After a victory in Thursdays opener, the Braves have mustered just 10 hits and been outscored 18-3. "Hes nasty," Johnson said. "For me, he is one of the best lefties in the game. He throws his cutter in to righties. He makes righties feel uneasy." They hurt themselves defensively Saturday, and lefty Paul Maholm (4-4) lasted just 4 1-3 innings and was charged with six runs on eight hits. The Giants led 2-1 when they broke the game open with a four-run fifth, aided by the adventures of Braves right fielder Justin Upton. Upton let Marco Scutaros liner skip past him for a one-out triple. After Pablo Sandoval was hit by a pitch, Buster Posey drove an RBI double deep to right that Upton made an awkward attempt on as it bounced up against the wall. Hunter Pence wass intentionally walked to load the bases, and Braves interim manager Carlos Tosca called on Cory Gearrin to relieve Maholm.dddddddddddd Giants manager Bruce Bochy sent up Blanco to hit for Francisco Peguero, and Blanco delivered a three-run double to right-centre that extended the Giants lead to 6-1. "It is definitely a difficult outfield," Upton said. "You definitely have to make a decision pre-pitch on how aggressive you want to be." Blanco was at it again in the eighth, when the Giants batted around and tacked on four more. His liner to left field skipped past a charging Evan Gattis and went for an RBI triple. Blanco is 9 for 19 this season with runners in scoring position. San Franciscos starting pitchers entered the day with a 4.48 ERA, which ranked 13th out of 15 NL teams. Bumgarner rebounded after his worst outing of the season, when he gave up five runs in six innings against Philadelphia on Monday. "Thats a tough lineup to go through and he did quite a job for us," Bochy said. Johnson, the Braves third baseman, struck out swinging in all three at-bats against Bumgarner. "Hes nasty," Johnson said. "For me, he is one of the best lefties in the game. He throws his cutter in to righties. He makes righties feel uneasy." Sandovals homer in the first gave the Giants an early lead. Brandon Crawford doubled in a run in the fourth to make it 2-0, one of two hits the left-handed hitting Crawford had off Maholm. Maholm entered Saturday having yielded just four hits to lefties all season. NOTES: Giants reliever Santiago Casilla was scheduled to run during batting practice to test his sore right knee, but Bochy wasnt planning on having Casilla available until Tuesdays road trip opener at Toronto. ... Tim Lincecum, who starts Sunday for San Francisco, has lost his last four starts against Atlanta. Kris Medlen will take the ball for the Braves, looking to snap a five-start winless streak. ...
