SEATTLE -- Mike Zunino got the pitch he expected from Detroit Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez and didnt waste the opportunity.Kyle Seager had two key hits that tied the score, Zunino lofted a game-winning sacrifice fly and the Seattle Mariners rallied twice to beat Detroit 6-5 in 15 innings Tuesday night for their season-high fifth straight victory.Hes got great stuff, Zunino said. I was just fortunate enough to get a changeup. Those guys put some great at-bats on him early and got his pitch count up and I was just able to get a pitch up.Victor Martinez gave Detroit a 5-4 lead when he opened the 15th with his 20th home run. But the Mariners came back against Rodriguez and took advantage of a pivotal error by left fielder Justin Upton.Rodriguez (1-3) issued a one-out walk to Nelson Cruz before Adam Lind singled. Seager, who tied it 4-all with a three-run homer in the eighth, followed with an RBI single to left. Upton booted the ball, allowing Lind to reach third base as Seager advanced to second.Zunino hit a fly ball to medium center field, and Lind slid home easily ahead of a wayward throw from Tyler Collins.Rodriguez converted 32 of his previous 33 save opportunities. These guys battled and to not be able to come through, Im a little frustrated. Its painful, definitely, Rodriguez said. Ive been here many times. One thing I have is a short memory. Ill be back tomorrow once again.Ariel Miranda (1-0), scheduled to start Thursday for the Mariners, entered in relief and gave up Martinezs homer but wound up with his first major league win.Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez homered off Seattle starter Wade LeBlanc, who allowed 10 hits and three walks in five innings. He left trailing 4-1.Seattle tied it on Seagers shot off Justin Wilson. Franklin Gutierrez singled to open the inning and Lind hit a ground-rule double with two outs. Seager drove the next pitch deep over the wall in right-center for his 21st home run.I threw a bad pitch to a good hitter, Wilson said. I wanted it down and away and I left it right in the middle of the plate. He was swinging and ran into it.Seattles bullpen turned in nine scoreless innings until Victor Martinezs homer.A lot of guys with not a lot of rest down there took the ball tonight, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. It says a lot about our team. We hang in there, we hang in there and when it looks its bleakest, we somehow pull it out. Really proud of our guys.Detroit jumped on LeBlanc for two runs on four consecutive hits to open the first. Ian Kinsler doubled on the first pitch and moved to third on Jose Iglesias single. Cabrera and Victor Martinez followed with RBI singles.Cabrera led off the third inning with his 26th homer, making it 3-0.Seattle cut it to 3-1 in the fourth when Robinson Cano hit a leadoff double and Cruz followed with a triple off the right-field wall.J.D. Martinez answered for Detroit when he opened the fifth with his 14th homer. The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth against starter Daniel Norris on consecutive singles by Gutierrez, Cano and Cruz. Right-hander Alex Wilson came on and retired three consecutive left-handed hitters without permitting a run.We had the lead late in the eighth inning and again there obviously at the end of the game, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Give them credit, they fought back against the back end of our bullpen, against Wilson and Rodriguez, and they got the job done.TRAINERS ROOMTigers: CF Cameron Maybin, who has missed five games since injuring his left thumb last week diving for a ball, is expected to go on the disabled list Wednesday. I guess they call it a Grade 2 sprain, a little bit more significant than originally thought, Ausmus said.Mariners: LHP James Paxton, hit on the left elbow by a line drive Sunday, is expected to play light catch Wednesday. The swelling has continued to go down, said Servais, adding there is no definite date for Paxtons return to the rotation.ROSTER MOVESMariners SS Ketel Marte (mononucleosis) was activated off the 15-day DL and batted ninth. Were going to try not to run him out there eight, nine, 10 consecutive days, Servais said. Hes going to play a couple, get a day off and keep him fresh and sharp here as we go down the stretch. INF Mike Freeman was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. ... Detroit claimed RHP Donn Roach off waivers from Seattle and optioned him to Triple-A Toledo. RHP Jeff Ferrell was designated for assignment. Roach was 2-0 with an 8.44 ERA in four games with the Mariners.UP NEXTTigers: RHP Justin Verlander (12-6, 3.52 ERA) starts the finale of the three-game series. Verlander, the AL pitcher of the month in July, is 8-1 in 12 starts since May 30. He is 5-5 in 10 starts at Safeco Field.Mariners: RHP Felix Hernandez (6-4, 3.55) wraps up the 10-game homestand. Even before the penalty issued Tuesday to Ryan Newman, the Richard Childress Racing driver was going to have a tough time getting into the Chase for the Sprint Cup without some help. Now he really could use the help. There have been 13 winners this year, and all 13 are in the top 30 in points. That leaves three spots in the Chase provisionally open to winless drivers, with there being only two if a previously winless driver triumphs at Richmond. With the penalty announced Tuesday, among the winless, Newman trails the three drivers currently in on points, Jamie McMurray by 22 points, Austin Dillon by 31 and Chase Elliott by 39.Its doable, Newman said Saturday. We can win a race. Thats doable, too. If we can separate the math from it, we can go down there and have some fun. Well go there to win.Pocono winner Chris Buescher has an 11-point cushion on 30th-place David Ragan. If he falls out of the top 30 and a driver who already has won a race this year wins at Richmond, there would be a fourth spot available by points. With the penalty, Newman has a 22-point edge on Kasey Kahne heading into Richmond for that spot.Heres a look at drivers chances to make the Chase:Chase Elliott: Hes in a good position. All he needs is a 17th-place finish at Richmond and hes in no matter what anyone else does. If there is not a new 2016 winner or Chris Buescher falls out of the top 30, all he needs is a 39th. Elliott owns all tiebreakers. Elliott has finishes of 16th and 12th in his two career Cup starts at Richmond.Austin Dillon: He pretty much controls his own destiny as long as things dont get too crazy. Hes in with an eighth-place finish or better. If there is not a new 2016 winner or Chris Buescher falls out of the top 30, all he needs is a 30th and hes in no matter what anyone else does. But if there is a new winner, hes just nine points ahead of Jamie McMurray for what would be the final spot. Dillon owns the tiebreaker on McMurray as long as McMurray doesnt finish second and Dillon owns the tiebreaker on Newman as long as Newman doesnt finish second or third. Richmond is not a good track for Dillon. His best finish is 20th in five startss with an average finish of 24.dddddddddddd2.Jamie McMurray: He was in a much more precarious spot before the Newman penalty. He had just a seven-point lead on Newman -- now its 22 -- and loses all tiebreakers to Newman. Richmond is not a great track for McMurray, who has an average finish of 20th. He does have three fourth-place finishes in his six previous Richmond starts.Ryan Newman: He needs to make up either 22 points on McMurray, most likely 32 points on Dillon or 39 on Chase Elliott. Richmond is a solid track for Newman, who won there in 2003 and has six top-5s in 29 starts with an average finish of 11.7 -- but he hasnt finished top-10 at Richmond in his past three starts. Being 22 points behind, he pretty much will need to think he has to win.Kasey Kahne: He needs a virtual miracle -- Chris Buescher falling out of the top-30 and Kahne gaining 22 points on Newman. To do that, Newman would have to finish 22nd or worse. Kahne wins the tiebreaker on Newman if he finishes second or third. Kahne did win at Richmond back in 2005 and has had two top-10s in his past three starts at the track. But he hasnt finished better than fourth since April 2011.Chris Buescher: Buescher owns all tiebreakers with Ragan, so his 11-point edge is really 12 points. But Richmond is not one of Bueschers best tracks. He has just one Cup start there, starting 33rd and finishing 34th in the spring. He had one top-10 in five Xfinity starts there. David Ragan hasnt had a whole lot of success, and driving for BK Racing in April, he was 23rd.Drivers needing a win at Richmond to get into the Chase: Ryan Blaney, AJ Allmendinger, Trevor Bayne, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Paul Menard, Greg Biffle, Danica Patrick, Aric Almirola, Clint Bowyer, Casey Mears and Landon Cassill. Among those drivers, only Bowyer has ever won a Cup race at Richmond and hes about as far from winning at Richmond as Martinsville is from that track.David Ragan and Regan Smith could get into the Chase with a win but would need help to make it into the top 30.
